Bio

Agnes Helen Armstrong, a member of the Cook Islands Democratic Party, has been an active participant in Cook Islands politics. Originally from Rarotonga, she pursued her education at Nikao Side School and Tereora College before engaging in various occupations, including seafood retailing, shipping agency, and working for Air New Zealand. In 2016, Armstrong relocated to Mangaia to embark on orchard farming. Her entry into politics was influenced by her husband’s successful election to Parliament in the 2017 Ivirua by-election, following which she succeeded him after his unfortunate passing in 2018. Subsequently, she participated in significant events such as the UNDP’s Pacific Women in Power Forum and advocated for changes within Parliament, such as the allowance of wearing ei katu (floral crowns) and took initiatives to support her constituents during the COVID-19 pandemic, including a voluntary pay cut.Despite her relatively recent entry into politics, Armstrong has made notable contributions, including her appointment as spokesperson for Internal Affairs and Outer Islands Special Projects in 2020 and her advocacy for tariffs on imported produce to stimulate local agricultural production. Armstrong’s reelection in the 2022 Cook Islands general election underscores her continued commitment to serving her constituents and advocating for initiatives aimed at benefiting the Cook Islands community.
