In theory, men and women across the Pacific enjoy equal rights to participate in politics. In practice, however, deep-rooted social, cultural, and economic barriers continue to limit women’s involvement in national and local decision-making.
To address these challenges, regional frameworks like the Pacific Plan and the Revised Pacific Platform for Action have emphasized the need for stronger support for gender equality in political life. This includes promoting women’s leadership, upholding human rights treaties such as CEDAW, and ensuring fair and inclusive electoral processes.
Many partners across the Pacific are working to amplify women’s voices in politics. Yet, there remains a pressing need for better coordination and sharing of knowledge and tools.
This website, developed by UNDP as a pilot initiative, aims to bridge that gap. It brings together news, research, and updates on efforts to support women in politics across the region. In the future, the platform may also offer practical tools for women candidates—such as training resources and fundraising support—similar to platforms like EMILY’s List.
